Jean-Talon Market, Montreal

I visited the Jean-Talon market twice last week to pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables. Here are a few photos from one of my excursions. I'll be posting more photos of the market in the next couple of weeks.

The market was first opened in 1933. Today the market is open 7 days a week, year round. This is one of the best public markets in Montreal. Many of Montreal's restaurant owners shop here each morning to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables.

Local businesses, which include bakeries and butchers, have established themselves adjacent to the market.

At this time of year the market is full of fresh and locally grown vegetables.

Last week I bought a number of delicious Ontario peaces. Yummm.

Night photos of Marché Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal

A few nights ago some friends and I passed by the Marché Côte-des-Neiges on the way to a nearby Russian restaurant. One friend happened to have a camera on him so I borrowed it and snapped these nighttime shots of the market.

Numerous incandescent light bulbs hanging from wires illuminate the products on sale. Passers by cannot help but look toward the bright glow of the market.

A man heads out of the market.

My friends wait at the intersection to cross the street.

Marché Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal

Yesterday morning I headed to the little Côte-des-Neiges market located at the corner of Jean-Brillant and Côte-des-Neiges, opposite the Côte-des-Neiges metro station.

The market is enclosed in a tent-like structure.

The Market, which is one of 14 neighbourhood markets across Montreal operated by the city-owned Corporation de Gestion des Marchés Public de Montreal, is open 24 hours a day/7 days a week during the summer months. The market mainly sells fruits, vegetables, flowers and plants.

Here are some imported apples and Quebec tomatoes.

The market had an assortment of fresh Quebec berries.

Atwater Market, Montreal

Andrew and I walked around the Atwater Market in Montreal yesterday. The Market, which is located in Saint-Henri, operates year round. There are two storeys of permanent vendors inside the market building and seasonal vendors outside which sell fresh produce in season. Here are a few photos from our excursion.

The Atwater Market, with it's towering clock tower, is an elegant art-deco style market building constructed in 1933.

The market is located at 138 Avenue Atwater, a short walk from the Lionel-Groulx Metro Station.

Here's another perspective of the market.

The market has a few nurseries selling plants of all kinds.

The display of vegetables is beautiful. Andrew and I walked along the line of seasonal vendors a few times... I picked up some wild blueberries, apples, corn and tomatoes, all of which were grown in Quebec. The blueberries are excellent!

Fresh Quebec tomatoes, fruit and berries ... yum!

Butchers, bakeries and some other permanent food vendors are inside the market building.

The Atwater Market is owned and operated by the Corporation de Gestion des Marchés Public de Montreal, a city-owned organization. Check out their web site for a list of other markets that they own and operate throughout Montreal.

The market is located adjacent to the Lachine Canal, a linear recreational park operated by Parks Canada. This park is heavily used by recreational bikers and walkers. Andrew and I sat by the water for some slices of pizza that we bought at the market.

Condo buildings and new retail have been developed adjacent to the market.

The Forks Market, Winnipeg

While I was in Winnipeg for an urban planning conference in July, I decided to check out the The Forks Market. The market is located at the confluence of the Red River and Assiniboine River, which is an important heritage site. The City has invested quite a bit of money into the forks area: there is the market, a children's museum, a hotel and a pleasant waterfront park. Below I've included some photos from my excursion.

This photo was taken near the entrance to the market. There are all sorts of stalls and vendors selling various products. This market is more of a tourist attraction/speciality foods market than a traditional farmers' market selling local produce. The sandwich and cinnamon role that I purchased at one of the bakeries were both delicious.

The selection of foods is excellent and the seating area is pleasant. Here you can see people enjoying a mid-afternoon snack.

This is a view of the market from the second storey.

This is a view of the outside of the market building.

A few hundred metres from the market there's the elegant Esplanade Riel Bridge, completed in 2003, that crosses from the forks waterfront park over the river to St. Boniface, the French-speaking part of town. Here's some more info on the bridge from wikipedia.
